Unplugged: Day 5
Well, we've reached day 5, and I have to say, I've never had such a quiet house! Well, I mean, not this quiet with the kids home :) Everything is so PEACEFUL. There has been almost no fighting - and with 3 kids, that's a true miracle - and they are playing together willingly! The boys have discovered their long-lost remote controlled helicopters and have been playing with them daily. Morgann has rediscovered playing dress up and is constantly showing up in a new outfit. And they've even made time for playing with friends, being sure to notify them up-front that they cannot turn on any games or TV.

Unplugged
This is our week to "unplug" from the world of electronics - games, computers (unless work-related), TV's, movies, etc., etc., etc. Its something that I've been tossing around trying for a while, but just haven't had the guts to do it. But the constant bickering, whining, complaining, etc., had taken its toll on me as of last Friday, and by Friday night, the decision had been made. And while Michael wasn't too keen on the idea because I was asking him to unplug from his games too, he relented and agreed to try it out - at least while the kiddos are awake.

New-found Interests
Who knew that our family was into gardens & flowers?!? Certainly not me!! Seriously had no idea that if I would just get out there and dig out the ugly, I would find such pleasure in planting the beautiful. It is something that I find myself doing at various times throughout the day & week. I have noticed that as I drift off to sleep, I'm thinking about what I need to do in the front flower bed, where I should put what, how I should have done this or that differently, etc., etc., etc. And I've also noticed that I find reason to go way out of my way to "happen by" my favorite nursery. Its an on-going fixation. And its one that I swore I didn't have! "No, I am not going to work in my flower bed, even though it is overrun with grass and tacky. I'll just pay someone else to clean it out". If only I had known then what I know now...

Humble beginnings
This is our garden. Well, let me rephrase, this is the box that will be our garden. Michael & I spent an hour & half in Lowe's walking back & forth & back again buying the wood, weed barrier, brackets, nails, gardening hand tools, and various & sundry other items today. It was a looooooong hour & a half, let me tell ya! And expensive too! Altho we bought a new weed-eater/edger and a new drill, so that contributed to the expense. But still, you'd think we were made out of money or something!! I was so excited yesterday when I left the garden center with all of our new plants, seeds, soil, and "stuff" for only $138. Little did I know the 4 bags of soil and 1 bag of compost wouldn't even begin to make a dent in filling our 7'x4'x10" garden box. Yeah, its looking as tho I will be buying allot more soil tomorrow. And can I just say that organic soil isn't cheap!

Spring 2011
Well, I've been away for a very, VERY long time, but have been trying to get back to my little blog. I just haven't had anything to write about here. I have another blog that I've kept updated, but it really doesn't correlate to this blog, so this one has fallen by the way-side.

Unexpected Blessings!
So, I thought I'd jump on here to say that I had a bit of good news today :) I called our mortgage company to inquire about whether they needed me to send them a tax bill that I'd received last week, since we pay an escrow and that is supposed to cover our taxes. Anyway, I had several questions that I asked (since this is our first go-around with owning a house/taxes/etc.) and I wanted to be sure that I have all of our bases covered. One of the things I asked was when we would know what our "new" house payment was going to be, since I was assuming that it would increase at least somewhat for a new escrow amount - higher taxes is what I was getting at. I really don't want to get hit with a huge tax bill because we haven't been paying enough all year! So, she said that our account wouldn't be reviewed until September, at which time they would adjust our payments accordingly. UNLESS we wanted to have a review done now? So, of course I said yes - I'd much rather have the increase now and know that we're paying enough versus waiting until almost the end of the year! Well, she quickly ran through a few things then informed me that our payment would indeed be changing. Our property taxes had actually DECREASED and we had overpaid according to their records, so not only is our house payment going down, but we're getting a $450 refund :) I was shocked - since when do taxes go down?!?
Anyway, for now, we are very excited about saving about $40 a month, and the refund will be a nice addition to our savings account :) That said, I'm not going to just assume all is well - I plan to call them again over the summer to have them re-asses things to be sure we're still paying enough!
So, thought I would share and say PTL for God's grace :) Our being in this beautiful house was nothing short of a miracle from start to finish, and He is continuing to bless us and remind us that He is in control!

Below Freezing...and Dropping!
We live in Texas - for a reason! We aren't used to having temps in the freezing zone, much less below freezing! And to hear that temps will be in the teens tonight and not be above freezing tomorrow just makes for a miserable weekend!

New Year's Resolutions
I don't generally make a New Year's Resolution, simply because I know its something that I won't keep. I decided long ago that if I was going to commit to something, I needed to do it when I meant to keep it, not when it was "time" to come up with something to resolve. So, I've never bothered.

Taking a break!
We are "out", enjoying our summer, so I'm not taking much time to post on the blog right now. But, if you are interested in finding out what might be happening with this or this, feel free to click the links and browse away!
Now, if we could just get a little rain....

Summertime Fun!
As a few of you know, Alex, still my baby boy, left for his first "summer camp" experience on Sunday morning - the buses pulled out bright & early at 6:20AM! Two buses loaded with 60 kiddos left for Dry Gulch USA, a Christian camp based in Oklahoma, and run by Willie George Ministries. This is the 6th year our church has attended this camp, but the first time for about 2/3 of the group that left on Sunday. Today is Tuesday and I miss my little man so very much, but know he is probably having the time of his life :) Anyway, the children's pastors are keeping a blog of their daily goings-on, and are posting a few pictures to appease the parents. Tonight I found my son's picture on there...he's flying!!! OH.MY.GOSH!!!!
